It starts with back to school ads that start playing on our TV's in mid July. Sure they seem innocent though we get a sneak peak of the “back to school blues,” and for many people it just multiplies after that. Now come late-August, it hits us, that the pending school year is almost upon us and the back-to-school blues are in full swing. Come the middle of September, school is in full swing for another year!
The back-to-school blues can take a major toll on you and your families happiness and health. Last year a Care.com survey showed 55% of people survery said they find that time of year stressful and a approximately 1/3 feel anxious about it. I wanted to offer a few solutions to beat these blues!
Learn to identify the cause: In children stress can show itself in many way, some expected, and some not so expected. Parents may notice mood swings, change in sleep habits, decrease in appetite, or some behavioural changes. In adults, your own stress can take shape in the form of insomnia, irritability, tense muscles, gastrointestinal issues, and so much more. It is very important to realize the cause and then how to deal with them.
Keep balanced & scheduled: Every family member needs a healthy balance of homework, chore time, downtime, and quality family, all while trying to get enough sleep. Which is a lot to take on, especially with what seems like a million and two extracurricular activities you will have to get them to and from! It will help everyone in the family to work together to try to create a schedule of things that need to get done.
Practice family wellness: It is important to discuss way as a household, that everyone can get enough sleep, drink enough water, exercise, and/or care for your muscles and joints. People of all ages, from birth to elderly can benefit from daily routines.
Getting regular massages: This can take care of a multitude of symptoms! If you or one of your family members suffer with poor sleep patterns, sore or fatigued muscles, stress, or anxiety, then a regular massage can be a great addition to your monthly routines. I welcome all ages to my space, although I do request those under 18 accompany them to their first few appointments. Make sure to keep up with your own massage routine. Keeping up with regular massage therapy appointments can help you take care of your stress!
