Why Am I Sore After A Massage?

Massage as we know it is more likely to decrease muscle tension and soreness than create it. But maybe you recently changed it up with massage therapists. Maybe you asked for a “deep” massage. Perhaps you were looking for a specific type of massage therapy after some intense physical activity. But then you realize, everything hurts. Generally speaking, receiving massage therapy is not likely to make you sore, though there a variety of reasons massage therapy could make you feel sore the next day and there are several different things you can do to combat against it too!

You may have overestimated your tolerance: Which there are no problems with this at all, it happens to everyone. It's always important to convey if there is any discomfort during a massage therapy treatment. And sometimes it just happens that you prefer the deep pressure on your legs, with feather light pressure on your shoulders. If the pressure is ever too much, please tell me!

I overestimated your tolerance: Which sometimes happens too! And here is why. As a registered massage therapist I am trained to “read” your tissues and to pay special attention to resistance in muscles and fascia and easing pressure up when I feel tension. Though sometimes that doesn't always happen. As a registered massage therapists, I'm not trying to pushing limits to see how much pressure any given client can take. Again I state, if the pressure is ever too much, please tell me!

You may have forgotten to stretch afterwards: It is not yet common knowledge that stretching subsequently after a massage is a good idea. Some registered massage therapists may not even recommend it after your appointment. Or I may have forgotten to mention how stretching would benefit you. Though stretching won't completely guard against soreness after deep massage, it can assist in retaining the effects of your treatment.

What you can do about it: Avoid the idea that a “good” massage is meant to be painful, or that a massage needs to be deep to be effective. Always check in during the massage treatment about your pressure preference will be greatly appreciated.
