ALL ABOUT: Myofascial Release

What is myofascial release?

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a gentle, hands-on technique that focuses on the fascia — the connective tissue that surrounds and supports your muscles, organs, and joints. When fascia becomes tight or restricted, it can cause pain, tension, or limited movement. MFR helps release those restrictions to restore motion and reduce discomfort.

Okay, but what is fascia?

Fascia is like your body’s internal spider web — a thin layer of connective tissue that wraps around every muscle, organ, and bone. When it’s healthy, it’s stretchy and smooth. But when it tightens up (from stress, injury, posture, overuse, etc.), it can pull things out of balance and cause pain or restricted movement. Myofascial Release (MFR) helps ease that tension so everything moves how it’s supposed to again.

What makes this different than a therapeutic massage?

Unlike traditional massage, which targets muscles directly, MFR works with the fascia. There’s less “kneading” and more slow, sustained pressure and stretching. It’s not about force — it’s about patience and precision

Do I need to undress for this type of appointment?

Totally your call! It can be done with or without lotion, depending on the area being treated. Often, MFR is done directly on the skin with minimal or no oil so I can feel and follow the tissue properly. You’ll always be appropriately draped and comfortable.

What does it feel like after?

You might feel looser, lighter, or more aligned. Occasionally there’s some mild soreness (similar to a workout), which usually fades within a day or two

What are the benefits to myofascial release?

Myofascial release has many benefits, including relief from tension headaches, chronic pain, and specific injuries. Massage therapy is a highly effective way to improve general well-being and can help reduce stress levels. Additionally, MFR has been shown to help improve muscle function and flexibility.
