All About: Manual Lymphatic Drainage

What is manual lymphatic drainage?

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a gentle massage technique that promotes the movement of lymph fluids around the body, helping to remove waste, toxins, and excess fluids. It’s particularly beneficial for reducing swelling, enhancing circulation, and supporting the immune system.

Who can benefit from MLD?

MLD is beneficial for a wide range of people, especially those recovering from surgery, dealing with lymphedema, experiencing chronic inflammation, or looking to support their body’s natural detox processes. It’s also helpful for those who want to improve skin health and reduce puffiness.

How does MLD work?

The technique uses light, rhythmic strokes that encourage lymph flow toward lymph nodes, where waste products are filtered. By stimulating lymphatic circulation, MLD helps the body naturally clear out toxins and reduce fluid retention.

Is MLD painful?

No, MLD is a gentle, pain-free massage. It doesn’t use the deep pressure of other massage techniques, which makes it ideal even for those with sensitive skin or painful conditions.

How long is an MLD session?

Sessions typically last between 30 and 90 minutes, depending on your individual needs and treatment goals. I like to recommend we start at 30 minutes and then evaluate from there.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on your goals. Some people benefit from a single session, while others may need a series, particularly if they're recovering from surgery or managing a chronic condition.

Are there any side effects of MLD?

MLD is safe and usually has minimal side effects. Some clients might experience mild tiredness or increased urination as the body processes and expels waste. Drinking plenty of water after the session is recommended.

Is there anything I should do before/after a MLD treatment?

Before your session, hydrate well. After your session, continue to drink water to support lymphatic drainage and consider light movement, like walking, to further encourage circulation.

What's different between MLD and a regular therapeutic massage?

Unlike traditional massage, which can involve deeper pressure and target muscles, MLD focuses on stimulating the lymphatic system with very gentle, rhythmic movements. This helps reduce swelling and promotes detoxification without impacting the muscles as directly.

Can MLD help with recovery after surgery?

Yes, MLD can be highly beneficial for post-surgical recovery, as it helps to reduce swelling, minimize bruising, and improve circulation. Many clients find it helps speed up healing and ease discomfort after procedures like liposuction, tummy tucks, or joint surgeries. However, it’s essential to consult with your doctor first.

I've been experiencing lymphedema, would MLD help?

Yes! Sometime it's recommended to come for MLD treatments more frequently, but we will discuss this together.

What should I wear to a MLD appointment?

For a manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) treatment, you should wear loose, comfortable clothing that doesn't restrict your lymph areas. You should also avoid wearing tight or restrictive clothing that may impair circulation or cause irritation and swelling. This includes:

  • Shirt sleeves

  • Bra straps

  • Belts

  • Socks

  • Shoelaces

  • Jewelry, including watches, bracelets, and rings
