Myth-Busting: Pre-Natal Massage

Pregnancy comes with a lot of feelings—and a LOT of unsolicited advice. Suddenly everyone from your hairdresser to your second cousin’s neighbour has strong opinions about what you can and can’t do. And somewhere in that whirlwind of myths, outdated ideas, and half-remembered warnings, pre-natal massage often gets tossed in as something to “be careful” about. So let’s bring in some clarity, some science, and a whole lot of common sense. Pre-natal massage is safe, supportive, and incredibly beneficial when performed by a Registered Massage Therapist trained in prenatal care. And if you’ve been hesitant because of something you “heard somewhere”… this post is for you.

Myth #1: “You can’t get a massage in the first trimester.”

Truth: Yes, you can. Safely. Comfortably. Beneficially. This myth exists because many spas don’t treat first-trimester clients—but not for safety reasons, it’s purely to avoid liability. RMTs, on the other hand, have training in pregnancy anatomy, risks, and proper modifications. If anything, the first trimester is when people need massage the most—your body is exhausted, your hormones are wild, and you’re adjusting to a lot of changes behind the scenes.

Myth #2: “Massage can cause miscarriage.”

Truth: Massage does NOT cause miscarriage. Miscarriage is heartbreaking, but it results from chromosomal or developmental issues—not from receiving a safe massage. Gentle, supportive touch can actually lower stress hormones and help regulate the nervous system, which is a gift during pregnancy.

Myth #3: “You shouldn’t lie on your stomach once you’re pregnant.”

Truth: Early pregnancy? You absolutely can. Later on, I offer many different options:

  • Side-lying with bolsters & pillows (Fun fact: Side-lying massage is actually one of the most comfortable and effective positions for pregnant bodies. It supports the hips, relieves pressure on joints, and allows for safe access to the back, hips, glutes, and shoulders.)

  • Semi-reclined

  • Supported supine positioning

Myth #4: “Deep pressure is dangerous.”

Truth: Deep pressure isn’t the issue—poorly applied pressure is. During pregnancy, we avoid deep work on specific areas (mainly the abdomen), but we can absolutely treat you in a very similar manner to your massages pre-pregnancy. Pregnancy doesn’t automatically make you fragile—it just means your therapist should know anatomy, hormones, and how to modify appropriately.

Myth #5: “Massage can induce labour.”

Truth: If massage induced labour, I would have a long line of very pregnant clients begging me to work my magic at 40+ weeks. Massage does not “trigger” labour. There are areas that may influence the nervous system, but as a trained RMT, I know how to work around them safely. Massage promotes relaxation, reduces tension, and supports circulation—not contractions.

Myth #6: “Pregnancy massage is only for pain relief.”

Truth: Pain relief is a big part of it, yes. Think of pre-natal massage as a tune-up for a body working overtime. It’s not self-indulgent. It’s self-support. But pre-natal massage goes far beyond that.It can help with:

  • Swollen feet and ankles

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Rib cage discomfort

  • Pelvic pressure

  • SI joint pain

  • Mood and stress levels

  • Breathing mechanics

  • Tension from posture changes

  • Nerve discomfort (hello sciatic nerve pain!)

Myth #7: “Massage is unsafe without special pregnancy equipment.”

Truth: Fancy pregnancy tables and belly-cutout cushions are optional—not required. In fact, many RMTs (myself included) prefer side-lying and bolstered positions because they’re safer for your low back and pelvis, and that EVERY pregnant belly is a little different. What matters is not the equipment—it’s the training and knowledge behind the hands treating you.

Why I Love Treating Pregnant Clients:

Pregnancy work has always held a special place in my practice. There’s something incredibly meaningful about supporting someone during a time when their body is changing constantly and working harder than ever. Helping a pregnant client feel a little lighter, more comfortable, and more grounded—even for an hour—feels like such an honour. I love the gentleness of prenatal care, the intentional adjustments, and the connection that forms when someone trusts you during such a vulnerable and beautiful season. That connection often continues after the baby arrives. I specialize in infant massage as well, and there’s nothing quite like teaching new parents how to soothe and bond with their little ones through touch. Seeing a baby relax or watching a parent gain confidence is its own kind of magic. Supporting families through pregnancy, postpartum, and those early baby days is one of my favourite parts of this work—and I’m grateful every time someone lets me be part of their journey.
