It seems like everywhere you turn they are popping up everywhere you look. Similar to a certain green logo-ed coffee chain these places seem to be all over the place. In many cases you will find signs advertising “massage” of some kind of another. So, what is the difference between what you'd experience with me and what you would experience from some of these not-so legit massage storefronts? As it turns out lots! The title of “massage therapist” is not just a loosely-given title, it holds importance and relevance. Here's why it matters:
I have gone to school for over 2200 hours, I know about the anatomy of muscles, bones, ligaments, and joints. I know how and why the body can optimally work when everything is in proper portions, and how to “fix” things when it isn't. I have studied kinesiology (the study of body movements,) pathology (the study of effects diseases can have on the body,) and so much more! Basically I know my stuff!
I won't release your information willy-nilly. I will uphold your health and safety to the same degree as your doctor would. Of course, if you give the consent though, I will contact your doctor if there is an area concern, but not until I discuss this with you, as sometimes you can give me more insight than they can.
I get that massage therapy is not a “one size fits all” kind of thing. Quite often with one of these storefront massage operations you are treated just as another paying customer. When you come to see me I like to make you feel comfortable, and that you can let me know of things that may be have been giving you more grief since your last appointment.
As it stands right now in Saskatchewan, anyone can offer “massages” & charge money for massage type services. However, only a registered massage therapist will have the full knowledge and accreditation to provide a proper treatment. Make sure to be massage-savvy and whenever you see a new registered massage therapist to make sure their registration number is included on your receipt and you are always welcome to ask them questions on their training.
